By 1962 the process of reparations regarding the Strauss family was not completed by a
long shot. Who knows, whether Joseph (passed away 1965) lived to see at least a partly
just settlement. On April 4, 1962 Lilly again requests a written confirmation of Luise:
“... Dear Luise, today I’d like to ask a favor of you. At an earlier time you
had already sent a written confirmation as far as furniture and household
contents were concerned, however, as of today nothing has been
completed. It takes a long time until a person gets one’s rights.
You are well aware of the fact that I always used to work for our business,
in retail as well as in wholesale trade. For the latter I wrote up the costing
lists, wrote invoices and helped with finalizing the commissions. In order to
have some relief with housekeeping we used to have a permanent maid,
and after Milly was born we hired a schoolgirl to take her out in the stroller;
after Alfred’s birth Hede Appel joined us, and I’m sure you’ll remember her.
I filed a claim for compensation for myself, and I’d like to ask you for a
written confirmation patterned on the attached form, which may be typed or
handwritten.
I hope it is not too much of an inconvenience for you. ...”
