Europe’s Stray Kids - HIAS Finds Kin in U.S.
.... and this week HIAS was able to help another child who had been brought to their attention
by an American soldier.
Lt. Arthur Lipschutz wrote his mother: “ ..... One of our men came across a little German
Jewish boy of about 14 whose parents have been killed by the Nazis and one of whose sisters
he is fairly sure has been sent to Poland. His name is Alfred Strauss. Since 1939 he has been
passed along through the underground out of Germany and trough Holland, passing from one
family to another not knowing how long he will stay in one place. He has three uncles. One,
named Wertheim, he thinks lives in Cuba. Another, Leo Goldner, he believes lives somewhere
in the U.S. The third uncle is another Wertheim, who lives in San Francisco.
I know, that is very little to go by. But I would like to have these facts given to HIAS or
whatever organisation it is that works on these things and perhaps they will be able to locate
one of his uncles and help him along.”
Mrs. Lipschutz communicated with HIAS, who found that Tony Goldner, Milwaukee, and
Hermann Wertheim, San Francisco, were both listed as looking for surviving members of the
boy’s family. ...
