Last letter prior to deportation to Lilly's sister Toni Goldner née Wertheim in the USA
Frieda Wertheim, Lilly’s mother, writes:
My dear children!
Even though I wrote to you just last week I want to send you a few lines. Thank God! We are healthy,
and that’s the main thing. Since early this week your dear father, Joseph, and Lilly have to do forest work
from 7am to 6pm; all day long I am all by myself and take care of kitchen- and housework. Next week,
God willing, we’ll move over to the coal merchant Kohlmann’s place on the third floor; I really wish it
were all over soon. (Quite obviously this move did not materialize, since on December 8, 1941 the
deportation occurred.)
Emigration procedures are right now pretty much hindered. The Rosenberg’s and the Marx’s from
Bochum were ready to leave, everything was packed, furniture was sold, and now things don’t move at
all. Berta from Nieder-Ohmen, who had moved to Frankfurt last year, can’t be reached by letter any
longer since her address has changed, and I don’t know it either.-
If we only had known all of this we would have emigrated much earlier, but what’s past is past.
I wouldn’t know anything positive to report; already for a long time no news from dear Berny neither
from dear Willy; do you ever hear from them? If so let us know by letter.
This letter is also meant for the dear Forchheimers, it’s too much for me to write to each one of them.
To them, too, heartfelt greetings and kisses just like for you, my loved ones,
from your mother and grandmother, who loves you very much.
