Smashing shop windows of Jewish stores
during the night of March 13 to March 14, 1935
On the night of March 14, 1935, between midnight and 1:00am in Huenfeld,
the shop windows at the merchants Leo Nussbaum’s and Joseph Strauss’
stores were smashed by unknown, rock throwing perpetrators. Just before
midnight the perpetrators would drive up in front of Leo Nussbaum’s
business at Hauptstrasse 77, and throwing fat rocks they smashed the
uncovered big shop window, plus 8 small panes of the other two shop
windows. From there they drove up to Joseph Strauss’ grocery store on
Fuldastrasse 7, and here they threw 13 fat rocks at the shuttered shop
window. Of the shop window, which is subdivided by lattice into smaller
panes, they smashed six panes and one bar of the lattice. The shutters and
the shutters of the shop door, too, were severely damaged by the rock
throwing. One hour later, at about 1:00am the same perpetrators attacked
the shop window a second time. However, when Strauss shouted for help,
the offenders gave up on their plans.
Estimated property damage to the Nussbaum’s place is about 380 RM, and
at the Strauss’ place 100 RM, which includes damaged articles on display.
