When Alfred’s apron was on fire
I want to tell you another little story: Once a week a baker from
Grossenbach would come with his delivery cart, and the Strauss’
would buy a big loaf of bread although it was not for their own
consumption. A poor Christian family received it, for years, and
groceries to boot. The family had three boys, the father was a
coachman, unfortunately he was an alcoholic. One day - I remember
it exactly since I lived to see it - Mrs. Strauss came to our place.
This was in the early days of the ”third Reich”, and we lived already
in Fulda. Mrs. Strauss said: ” Can you imagine, Alfred came into the
house off the street and his apron was on fire!”
The boy was still a little guy. And who do you think set Alfred’s
apron on fire? The boys who for years had received bread from the
Strauss’ and quite obviously many other things. Those boys were
much older than little Alfred. The apron was smack on his body,
which means that the boys literally set Alfred on fire.
