After Joseph Strauss’ passing in August of 1965 his wife Lilly continued with his work on the committee. Due to the occurrences at Bamberg, and the difficulties to coordinate

the planning and dealing with the respective offices abroad, the realization of the memorial dragged on.

Finally, after all the hurdles had been cleared, and even the Secretary of the Interior of Hesse had provided a grant, the final draft could be acted upon by the stonemason Faust

at the end of 1968. To immortalize the murdered Jews from the county of Huenfeld, a parchment scroll with their names written on it was entered into the pedestal of the memorial.

Text in Hebrew - from Jeremiah 31: 15-16:

Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be

comforted for her children, because they are not. Thus

says the Lord: ”Keep your voice from weeping, and

your eyes from tears; for your work shall be rewarded,

and they shall come back from the land of the enemy.

Text in German:

During the years of tyranny from 1933 - 1945 the

persecution cost the lives of 154 Jewish people from

the county of Huenfeld. This memorial was erected in

memory of them and as a stark reminder.
