The memorial stone for the murder victims
at the Jewish cemetery in Burghaun
A certain amount of money, which the ”committee for the restoration of the Jewish
cemetery in Burghaun” had saved, was initially earmarked for the restoration of the
cemetery and uprighting of tombstones; later on it also was supposed to be used for the
financing of the proposed memorial.
As of April 1965 the then ”Landesrabbiner” (Chief Rabbi) Dr. Lichtigfeld from the
State Association of Jewish Congregations in Hesse concerned himself also with the
project.
The first draft of a threefold linked granite stone with the
engraved names of the 154 murder victims of the County
of Huenfeld turned out to be prohibitively expensive.
Thus in April of 1965 Joseph Strauss informed the State
Association in Frankfurt of the committee’s decision for
a less elaborate version; as far as the names of the victims
were concerned a different solution was proposed:
”The names of the 154 victims are supposed to be written
on a parchment scroll and entered into the pedestal of the
memorial.” Frightened by the news about the desecration
of the Jewish cemetery in Bamberg, the decision was
postponed.
