Creation of a new existence in New York
When I returned home from the war in 1952, I also
went back to work at the flashbulb factory where I had
worked formerly. Later on I intended to change to the
Bendix Co. That company manufactured instruments for
airplanes and rockets. However, they didn’t employ me,
because I was not yet an American citizen. After I became
an American citizen in 1956 I got the job with Bendix.
Initially I worked at the lathe, but later on I assumed a
supervisory function (position) within the field of flight
control systems, which was part of Wernher von Braun’s
rocket program. There I was employed for a total of ten
years. It was during that time when I married Doris Ruhr,
whose parents came from Germany also. In 1962 our
daughter, Karen, was born.

Zuerst arbeitete ich an der Drehbank. Später
übernahm ich im Raketenprogramm des
Wernher von Braun im Bereich der
Flugleitsysteme eine Kontrollfunktion. 10 Jahre
lang war ich dort insgesamt beschäftigt.
Während dieser Zeit habe ich 1959 Doris Ruhr
geheiratet, deren Eltern auch aus Deutschland
stammten. 1962 wurde dann unsere Tochter
Karen geboren.
