We owe our lives to the War’s fronts at the time. Riga became the center for
provisioning the Eastern front, and many of us were utilized for that purpose.
However, those who could not work were killed. They selected people in the
morning muster and moved them out, under the pretense of work elsewhere. People
disappeared that way and were never seen or heard of again. Many transports were
destined to Riga
but never arrived.
One spoke about
this in hushed tones,
since the passing
of rumors, even if
true, was a capital
offense.
Evidence was these
people’s clothing
that was sorted to
find the good
garments that were
sent back to
Germany.
