From ”Kristallnacht” up to Deportationon
After they had finished their meal, all the people present at Joseph Strauss’ took
their carry-on luggage, and in bright daylight walked to the Huenfeld station under the
supervision of local police. There they boarded the deportation train joining
numerous detained Jews from the Fulda area. Strictly guarded they were hauled off
to Riga via Kassel. After a three days journey on an unheated slow train they arrived
at the marshalling yard Skirotava - outside of town - during a very cold spell.
Joseph’s sisters and other relatives of the family were also extracted
from their homes and deported to concentration camps.
On that deportation train there were already
many fellow-sufferers, 132 Jews from Fulda
alone. By the time the train reached Kassel, the
number of detainees had increased to more
than 1000.
