After the painful separation it was at least comforting for the parents to know, that their
beloved children were safe for the time being. Now everything was about making plans
for the joint move to the U.S.A. Numerous bureaucratic demands had to be met, which
took quite some time.
After on September 1, 1939 Hitler-Germany had started WWII, the chance to escape
diminished dramatically. Now only a few escaped successfully. However, Joseph and
Lilly Strauss could not foresee this terrible development, thus they continued to work
hard towards their emigration. Lilly even learned the trade of a fashion designer - used
to be called ‘milliner’- with a cousin of Mrs. Eckert’s, since in the U.S.A. people, who
had learned a trade, were higher in demand than people with an education in commerce.
