Making preparations for escape: In the face of the devastating basis of their livelihood, and the more and more alarming situation, Joseph and Lilly Strauss had no other choice but thinking about escaping from Germany. However, it might take months or even years to complete all the paperwork. Therefore their priority was to get the children to safety as speedily as possible; and so they signed them up with the Jewish Relief Organization for a children’s transport abroad. In March of 1939 they were notified, that Milly, Alfred, and little Gertrud were scheduled for a children’s transport to Holland. The day to say goodbye came at the end of the month, namely shortly after March 26th.

“This week Joseph Strauss’ 3 children will leave with a transport for Holland” - that’s what Abraham Strauss from Burghaun wrote on March 26, 1939 to his son, Feiber in Palestine.
