Alfred attended the district school at Burghaun for about one year. ”After that”, so he remembers, ”my parents took me to the Jewish orphanage at Kassel, that there I might receive school lessons regularly. The name of the principal was Heilbrunn. I was there all by myself without my siblings. Gertrud wasn’t at school age yet, and I don’t have
any memories of Emilie; most likely she continued attending district school at Burg-haun. My cousin, Ernst Goldner, from Gersfeld, who was aunt Toni’s son, was
also in Kassel, and so was Berthold Schlesinger from Naumburg, from where my
mother came. At ”Crystal Night” my grandpa came to Kassel and took me back to Huenfeld. Back at Huenfeld I still watched the Synagogue being on fire! While being in Kassel we didn’t realize any of the things that were happening on the outside, because we were totally isolated. Later on we had school lessons at my parents’ place. After class my mom used to invite the teacher, Mr. Adler, for coffee and cake. Here, a little episode comes to my mind! At one of those occasions my mom said: ‘Mr. teacher
(Herr Lehrer), why don’t you have another piece of cake!’ The teacher, Mr. Adler,
said: ‘No thanks, I already had one piece.’ To that I remarked: ‘Oh no, Mr. teacher,
you ate two pieces already!’ I wanted him to know that I paid close attention.”
